Pioneering and Innovation

Gabel Associates has a long history of innovation, leading to the development of new approaches and programs to best serve its clients' needs.

The firm was the first registered energy agent and registered energy consultant in the State of New Jersey. The firm was also the first to develop an eBidding system for online energy purchasing approved by the State.

Gabel Associates was active in the development of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which produced the first regional cap-and-trade program for carbon emissions in the country. Our service on the Governor's Task Force for Renewable Energy helped structure the Renewable Portfolio Standard and produced one of the nation's first vibrant markets for renewable energy certificates.

Our project development and analysis has included the evaluation and formulation of different financing options, including lease arrangements that maintain tax credits and access to low cost capital. The Morris County Improvement Authority and the Somerset County Improvement Authority have both utilized this public finance/lease approach to realize renewable project savings of more than 35% to local municipalities and school districts.

We were integral to a host of policy developments in New Jersey including the restructuring of energy taxes; restructuring and deregulation of the electric and natural gas industries; greenhouse gas legislation; the Solar Energy Advancement and Fair Competition Act; development of offshore wind energy policy and regulatory structure; competitive natural gas pricing policy; unbundling of New Jersey's electric rates; setting an appropriate NOx allocation method; and establishing a Basic Generation Service procurement and credit approach.

Our history of firsts is particularly relevant as rapid technology and policy developments change the face of the energy industry, and we continue to craft innovative approaches to fit our clients' evolving energy needs.
